Suede

Suede is a petite, one-year-old Australian Shepherd mix and one of the Whitmann 20. She came into the shelter at just 17 pounds and was later recorded at 21.6 pounds. She has since been spayed and is now safely in foster care.

Suede had very little confidence around people when she arrived. Leashing, handling and unfamiliar environments were overwhelming, and her usual response was to retreat, freeze or make herself as small as possible. When people gave her space and slowed things down, though, she began taking tossed treats, cautiously moving closer and watching what was happening around her. She also allowed gentle petting and necessary handling even while she was still nervous.

Suede was kenneled with her brother, Corduroy, during their shelter stay. They were rescued together and have now joined each other in the same foster home, giving Suede a familiar companion while she adjusts to life outside the shelter.

She will need a patient home that understands fearful, under-socialized dogs and is comfortable letting trust build gradually. Predictable routines, low-pressure interaction and plenty of positive experiences will give Suede room to gain confidence at her own pace. She is young, responsive to treats and already showing the curiosity that her foster family can continue building on.
