Corduroy is one of the Whitmann 20, a young Australian Shepherd mix who came into rescue with his sister, Suede. The two were kenneled together at the shelter, rescued together, and are now in the same foster home while they get their first real chance to settle into life outside of a kennel.
Corduroy is a shy, sensitive dog who tends to observe before he participates. At the shelter, unfamiliar people and movement could make him freeze, get low, or retreat, but he showed that he was willing to engage when things were kept calm and low-pressure. Treat scatters helped him start exploring, and with patient handlers he worked his way up to approaching within reach and taking treats directly from their hands.
He also allowed gentle petting and remained calm when he needed to be carried. Corduroy is still learning that people can be safe and predictable, so he will do best with someone who can give him time, routine, and room to make his own choices instead of rushing interaction.
Having Suede nearby has given him a familiar companion through a major change in environment, and now both dogs are getting the opportunity to decompress together in foster care. Corduroy’s personality is still unfolding, but he has already shown curiosity, food motivation, and a willingness to move closer when he feels secure.
At about a year old, Corduroy has plenty of time to build confidence and learn the everyday routines of home life. For an adopter who appreciates the quieter dogs and is comfortable letting trust develop gradually, Corduroy has a lot of room to grow.
